TransformED futures: Towards human-centered, ecological and inclusive of the use and governance of AI in higher education.
The exponential growth in the use and application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, like ChatGPT, brought into sharp focus the need for a robust, firm and human-centred ethical framework to govern its adoption. For higher education institutions (HEI), the need for such a framework could not be more needed. Currently, universities are not equipped with the infrastructure and expertise to adapt and capitalize on this new technology. Moreover, the lack of clear regulations on the use of AI confronts universities with more challenges rather than providing solutions, which is initially the premise of AI. In the paper, I seek to provide some reflections on UNESCO’s call for a human-centred approach to AI and what that entails for universities of the future. Furthermore, I will suggest a roadmap for developing an ethical framework that is human-centred, ecological and inclusive of the use and governance of AI in higher education.
